A ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas is reportedly in its final stages, with critical terms being negotiated, a Palestinian official told the BBC. The deal, which also includes provisions for hostage releases and the movement of displaced civilians, could be finalized within hours or days, sources suggest.
US President Joe Biden described the negotiations as being “on the brink” of success, emphasizing urgent efforts by his administration. Israeli officials confirmed to Reuters that talks, mediated by Qatar, are progressing significantly.
Preliminary details of the agreement indicate that Hamas will release three hostages on the first day of the ceasefire, prompting Israel to withdraw troops from heavily populated areas. A week later, further hostages will be released, and displaced Palestinians in southern Gaza will be allowed to return north on foot. Additional terms involve the exchange of 1,000 Palestinian prisoners for 34 hostages held by Hamas, monitored by an international security team.
Despite progress, internal resistance within Israel’s governing coalition and looming geopolitical challenges remain hurdles to solidifying the agreement. White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan expressed optimism that a deal could be reached this week, as international stakeholders continue their diplomatic push for resolution.
